TGIF! Summer... Stay a Little Longer... Please?

A Note from the Publisher

I don't know about you, but I am not ready for summer to be over. I know a lot of parents are ready for their kids to be back in school and don't get me wrong, my kids drive me crazy every day, but all I can think about is all the things we still NEED to do before summer is over. Seriously... we have just over a week left and I want it to drag. We have lots to squeeze in! My daughter is so excited to start kindergarten and I am so not ready to put her on the school bus. She has lost 2 teeth in the last week and a half which is a big reminder that she's not my tiny little baby anymore. Ugh.

We have had a busy summer and have done so many fun things already, but there are so many things I wanted to do to make sure we squeezed every last bit of fun out of the short summer season... before five days a week are spoken for by school! Lots of adventures to be had!

So our Friday plan is to surprise the kids and take them to Storyland for the day, spend the night (maybe do some school shopping, but dad doesn't know that yet haha) and then go to Lost River Gorge the next day- maybe do the alpine slide at Attitash. I have so many great summer memories doing all three of those, I can't wait to have the kids re-live it with me. My little guy will be so excited that this year he is finally tall enough for most of the rides at Storyland. I am so excited to take him on Dr. Geyser's Raft ride! We also now know that we will not take him on the tilt-a-whirl... we realized at Funtown he hates it.... and then at York's Wild Animal Kingdom on Wednesday we learned he hates all spinning rides after he cried to get off the scrambler.

I also learned another important lesson at York- not all fun houses are created equally. I sent the two kids into one together, figuring I would save the $1.50 (we didn't buy tickets until we figured out what the weather was doing) and they would love being independent. It had to be like the one at the Topsham Fair- easy peasy, apparently I completely blocked out the book Funhouse by Dean Koontz. At first I wondered what was taking them so long, when they finally emerged at the top my little guy was crying and didn't want to go over or around the moving bridge. The lady running the thing told me I could go in and help him. Imagine my surprise to find myself in partial darkness trying to navigate this metal maze with uneven floors- not at all what I was expecting and not surprising it took them so long to come out. Then I get to the bridge and he is gone, so I keep going- into a pitch black maze/tunnel thing with black lights and paintings on the walls... complete with glassed in skulls and other weird artifacts on the wall. NOT AT ALL what I was thinking it would be, quite frankly, I thought it was creepy. By the time I get to the spinning tube there is another dad helping my crying baby get out. I felt so bad. You can hand me my mom of the year award now. Ugh.

So anyhow, we are going to enjoy this last week of summer vacation as much as possible!

Hope you enjoy the rest of what summer has to offer!
