Breaking Out the Sweaters... Or Holding on to Flip Flops?

A Note from the Publisher

By Whitney Wright- Midcoast, ME Publisher September 20, 2019

We bought heating oil the other day and I think by doing so we jinxed ourselves, because two days later we had to turn the heat on. 37 degrees in the morning is not cool, well it's cool, practically cold, but it is not cool kid cool. It's too early for that! I refuse to get out my winter clothes... in fact I was talking about buying new flip flops today (my new ones blew out during a clumsy attempt to carry too many things from the car up the stairs, it was a sad day.)

We did get one beach day in last weekend and I knew that if I didn't take advantage of the waves and go boogie-boarding I would regret it- so I made myself go in until I couldn't feel my extremities anymore. It was so cold (everyone else in the water had wet suits on for the most part) but it felt so great! The forecast does look nice coming up, so it's a promising sign for another beach day or two and that we may not need the heat again- fingers crossed!

I will confess though, I am so excited to go apple picking and we are hoping to take a drive up to Sugarloaf in a few weeks to see the leaves. I went to school at UMF and spent weekends at Sugarloaf for many, many years (my mom, sister and I all taught skiing there) so Fall in the mountains has a special place in my heart and it has been over 10 years since I have been up there. I feel like my kids need to visit the area that was my second home for a long time. Hopefully I will get my act together to share some photos in an upcoming newsletter- along with one of my favorite apple recipes. (Hopefully I can make it soon so you don't have to look at my terrible, old photo of it.)

This weekend we are running the Great Inflatable Race in Brunswick. It's SUCH A FUN race. The last two years we have run it with a bunch of friends, there is always lots of laughter. We were a little late to register this year (or get a team together) but if anyone is out there doing it and sees the team E=MC Hammer- that's us! (Well assuming I get time to make the shirts I have in mind!)

I also plan on taking the kids to the Common Ground Fair. I haven't been since I was pregnant with my daughter six years ago, I am hoping it's not crazy busy... and has all the yummy food it had before. This time I don't have to worry about things not being pasteurized like last time either! When we went that last time we walked so much and I realized after the fact that I didn't know if the cider I drank was "safe". I was so tired and achy when we got home that I decided to sit in the hot tub we had at the time. My OB had told me 5 minutes would be okay on occasion, but I had avoided it up until that point (I was 8 months pregnant at the time of the fair.) Well I sat in the hot tub for 8 or 9 minutes and then got all freaked out about it. That night I realized that baby girl hadn't been moving much then in the early morning I started feeling strange spasming movements I hadn't felt before. I was worried I ate something wrong or walked too much (never mind the fact that I had been waitressing all summer) or that I spent 4 minutes too long in the hot tub. I called the doctor all panicked, they assured me she was probably fine and then everything seemed normal again. Fast forward to when I was in labor and they were monitoring her and I suddenly felt the strange spasms again and the nurse said, "Oh look! She has the hiccups. Do you feel that?" I felt so silly. So yeah, long story short, I can't wait to drink cider without worry and only wish I had a hot tub to come soak in when we get back!

This weekend a lot of Macaroni Kid publishers are in Carlsbad, CA for the annual meet up. I am already jealous of all the photos I am seeing- but I can't wait to hear what everyone learned while they were there. I hope they all have a blast!

Wishing you all a fun weekend!
