If you haven't been to the Boothbay Railway Village you are missing out. Seriously. Not only do you get to ride a train, but you get to take a step back in time. My kids love going. I loved going as a kid. I haven't met a kid who doesn't leave without a smile on their face.

About the Railway Village (from their website):
The Boothbay Railway Village is not about us.
It is all about you.
The Village is all about your visit back in history … to a time soon after Maine became a recognized state in 1820, in that powerful period between the mid-19th and the mid-20th centuries when America – and Maine – became an industrial powerhouse – largely on the backs of small 24” gauge trains that lugged supplies and workers through narrow, out of the way passages to early settlers hungry to grow their villages and towns bursting with goods for export.
This Village is about you. How you feel when stepping back in time. What you learn about how far Mainers have come since the “old days.” How smooth and sleek the fender of a vintage auto is under your hand. What you remember about your childhood in the face of the mesmerized youngsters sitting across from you, hanging out the train windows, their hair blown backwards.
- At the Village, you’ll watch engineers in greasy overalls working to preserve the engines and passenger coaches that ride the tracks around the Village.
- You’ll walk around the Village Green quicker than you can imagine, visiting the vintage structures dotting the 30 acres that is the Village – the shops, barn, chapel, Town Hall, fire station, garage and other historic and humble structures that speak to the time when life may have been harder – but simpler.
- You may end up sitting across railway or vintage car enthusiasts and historians that gravitate to Midcoast Maine from across the United States and worldwide to see and experience the remarkable engines.
- You will be delighted by the model train villages and operations at the Village – the envy of many a grown man with a little boy’s heart.
- And if vintage cars are your heart’s desire, you’ll walk up the hill to see our over 60 vintage vehicles, up close and personal.
- And, if you give a thought to the major philanthropic foundations and individual donors that contribute annually to the preservation of the little “24 inch” workhorses that created history, right here in Maine – it’s because they feel exactly like you about authenticity, history and just plain joy.
The Railway Village is a beloved and special place, where those who support us value history. Where those who work here preserve the past – and are grateful for the opportunity. So that when you visit, it’s a place you’ll want to visit again. And again.
