Happy Friyay!

A Note from the Publisher

By Whitney Wright- Midcoast, ME Publisher September 13, 2019

It’s FRIYAY!

I feel like channeling Jessie Spano and singing, “I’m so excited, I’m so excited”, but I will refrain, my husband says I am tone deaf… although he is just plain deaf, so I don’t know why he is complaining about my lack of musical prowess. Or maybe it’s just selective hearing? Either way, I will sing it in my head.

Hopefully everyone is almost back into a routine with school. My little guy started his first at preschool and is loving it. He cried on Monday night when he found out he had to wait another day to go back and that his sister got to go to school and he didn’t. So I would say between both of my kiddos, they are loving school.

All the libraries and other places that have events for kids are bulking up their calendars- and quickly! I am trying to catch them all, but wow! It’s hard to keep up- which means we are SO FORTUNATE to live in an area with so many great things for kids and families to do! If you happen to see an event that I have missed please feel free to submit it HERE. The only requirement I have is that events are under $15 each (preferably free!) although sometimes if something is benefiting children or adults are a little bit more and kids are free I will still include them. (Or sometimes you may see an event that is sponsored aka that business may be paying or bartering to have their event included- that will always be marked as such.)  We are only a family of four and I feel like a lot of times doing fun things add up really quickly, so I definitely want to make sure to find affordable things to do for families- especially those with several children- for such little people they certainly aren’t cheap!

Last weekend we really enjoyed seeing Rick Charette at Maine Wildlife Park. I’d be lying if I said that all the kids there enjoyed it more than the parents. The parents were totally singing along louder than the kids were. I know a lot of parents, myself included, don’t “do” kids music. I mean we will sing kids songs, but I don’t have kid specific CDs in my car and at night my kids listen to a mix on Amazon of Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffett and Jack Johnson. However, I will sing all the Rick Charette songs using my whole heart and tone deaf vocal chords. Clearly as everyone belted out I Love Mud or Bubblegumor Alligator in the Elevator  and exclaimed ow much they loved certain songs, they also felt the same- Rick Charette is kid music worthy of singing. He said he has one last concert, I believe in December (but it isn’t on his site as far as I can tell) but I will be sure to keep any RC lovers out there updated. He certainly deserves retirement after 35 years of singing with his Bubblegum Band. And of course I was so excited to trade in my VHS tape from the first concert I ever went to for the DVD version. (But my sentimental self isn’t quite ready to get rid of that VHS tape!)

I mentioned last week that I hoped to get six more beach days in… I was hoping on Wednesday that maybe I could sneak one in- it was so beautiful!- but we had too much going on. I am worried my goal might be a little lofty and I may need to slowly work on my break up speech with my summer dreams and try to welcome Fall. I tried to get used to the idea of Fall coming last night as I added Halloween (I LOVE Halloween!) and Fall shirts to my Etsy shop. I will say, that did help a bit, because I can’t wait to watch Hocus Pocus! My love for Hocus Pocus is no secret as I worked on Sanderson designs in my design shop and on shirts, my husband probably thinks I am crazy (just wait until he sees the others coming haha.) If anyone out there has a vinyl cutting machine and needs some design files please check out my shop- I’m having a sale hoping to hit my first 1,000 sales! Now that I have a little extra time I am so excited to get more designs in my shop! (Yes, shameless self-promotion haha… got to support my children’s food habit 😉 ) I take requests for custom designs as well- so if you are going somewhere fun and need a design or have an idea you want just ask and I will see what I can do! I am such a geek and get so excited about everything design related and it’s nice to be getting back into a routine!

Something else exciting in my little MK world- the first event I am hosting along with the other Maine MK publishers… Moms Mingle Speed Friend-ing! You can read all about it here, it should be a great time! I can’t wait!

There are also so many fun events coming up this weekend! And if I have to get excited about Fall… well apple picking season is upon us and I really do love Fall activities (but also beach days, don’t forget how much I love the beach haha.)

Next weekend, after we run the Great Inflatable Race, I am planning on taking the kids to the Common Ground Fair. The last time I went was six years ago, when I was very pregnant. We went on a Saturday (I think… or maybe it was Sunday?) and I remember it being very busy. If anyone out there has insight on which day might be less busy (well aside from Friday, because you know, school, boo!) I would love tips on taking two kiddos 5 & under on my own… or am I crazy for even debating it? I promised the kids a fair with animals and I want to go because I know the food is better than normal fair food, priorities ha!

And completely random, but have you all been noticed the beautiful sunsets lately? They are so pretty. We had to take a drive down to the end of the road the other night, 9/11, to watch the pink fog roll in- it was such a pretty, mysterious, dream like foggy sunset. We are truly lucky to live in such a beautiful place and reflecting on the tragic events that day made me feel so very grateful to be able to watch the sunset with people I love, knowing that so many people were out there hurting so much that day, wishing they had their loved ones to share memories with. It definitely reminds you of how fragile life is and to make sure you enjoy each moment and give all the love you can.

On that note, please spread love. Enjoy a sunset. Find a moment of peace. Tell your loved ones how much you love them often.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Be kind.

Share laughter.

Give a smile.

And find your family fun!
